Filing an Extension

If you can't file by April 15, you can request an automatic 6-month extension. However:

You must still pay estimated taxes by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest.

How to file for an extension

File IRS Form 4868 for federal and IT-370 for NY State before April 15.
