Texas does not levy a state income tax on wages and salaries, making it one of the most tax-friendly states for workers. Residents only pay federal income tax and FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare). This can result in significant savings compared to high-tax states like California or New York.
Tax Brackets
Texas has no state income tax brackets because it doesn't tax wage income. However, you're still subject to federal income tax brackets, which range from 10% to 37% in 2026.
Deductions
Since there's no state income tax, state deductions don't apply. Focus on federal deductions like the standard deduction, charitable contributions, and mortgage interest.

How Texas income tax works in 2026
Texas does not levy a tax on wage and salary income. Residents still pay federal income tax and FICA, so the only state-level figure on this page is zero — the money that stays in your pocket is the difference a state income tax would have taken.
State taxable income is not gross pay. Every state starts from a defined base — most commonly federal adjusted gross income — and then applies its own standard deduction, personal exemption and credits before the rate schedule touches a dollar. Payroll withholding is only an estimate of that final figure, which is why a refund or a balance due appears when the return is filed. The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is the authority for every rule on this page.

What the estimate above includes — and what it leaves out
| Included | Not modelled |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax on the 2026 IRS brackets | State-specific credits and exemptions (each state publishes its own) |
| FICA — Social Security at 6.2% up to the SSA wage base and Medicare at 1.45% | Local county, city or school-district income taxes that some states layer on top |
| Texas state tax from the schedule modelled in this tool | Alternative minimum tax, phaseouts and surtaxes on high incomes |
| Pre-tax 401(k) and HSA contributions that reduce taxable income | Self-employment tax, which has its own calculator on this site |
| The city or locality you select in the form | Non-wage income — capital gains, dividends and interest may be taxed on different rules |
Need the per-paycheck view instead of an annual figure? The paycheck calculator breaks the same numbers into pay periods, and the salary comparison tool shows what a move between Texas and another state does to take-home pay. If you work for yourself, start from the self-employment tax calculator.
Filing a Texas return for 2026
Individual returns are generally due April 15 following the tax year — moved to the next business day when that date falls on a weekend or holiday — and most states align their own deadline with the federal one. Where the two differ, the state deadline is the one that matters for state penalties, so confirm it with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Federal filing details, including extensions and electronic filing, are on the IRS individual tax hub.
If you are self-employed or expect to owe more than the estimated-tax threshold, quarterly payments replace withholding. Our filing deadlines guide lists the federal and New York dates and the tax calendar renders them as a dated schedule. Comparing Texas with the rest of the country, or with New York, is easiest from the state pages index and the bracket guide.
