Utah uses a flat income tax rate of 4.65%. This means all taxable income is taxed at the same rate regardless of how much you earn. Flat taxes are simpler to calculate and don't penalize higher earners with progressively higher rates.
Tax Brackets
Unlike states with graduated brackets, Utah applies a single flat rate of 4.65% to all taxable income. This makes tax planning straightforward.
Deductions
Common deductions include the standard deduction (or itemized deductions), retirement contributions, and student loan interest. Check state-specific rules for additional deductions.
Official sources
The rates, brackets and filing rules behind this calculator come from the Utah State Tax Commission. Check anything that affects your return against the primary sources: Utah State Tax Commission and the IRS individual tax hub.
How Utah income tax works in 2026
Utah applies a single flat rate of 4.65% to taxable income. The same rate applies to your first dollar and your last dollar, which makes withholding straightforward to check: state tax equals taxable income multiplied by 4.65%.
State taxable income is not gross pay. Every state starts from a defined base — most commonly federal adjusted gross income — and then applies its own standard deduction, personal exemption and credits before the rate schedule touches a dollar. Payroll withholding is only an estimate of that final figure, which is why a refund or a balance due appears when the return is filed. The Utah State Tax Commission is the authority for every rule on this page.

| $100,000 | $4,650 (4.65%) | $5,332 (5.33%) | $0 |
| Top marginal rate | 4.65% | 11.7% | No state income tax |
| Standard deduction (single) | Varies — see the state instructions | $8,000 | Not applicable |
| Local income or wage tax | See the state rules below | New York City resident tax and the Yonkers surcharge apply inside those cities | None at state level |
Effective rates are the state tax divided by the taxable income shown, computed with this site's own state models. New York uses the 2026 statutory schedule. Utah's standard deduction and personal exemption are not stored in this tool; the figures below start from taxable income rather than gross pay, which is what the state applies its schedule to.
What the estimate above includes — and what it leaves out
| Included | Not modelled |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax on the 2026 IRS brackets | State-specific credits and exemptions (each state publishes its own) |
| FICA — Social Security at 6.2% up to the SSA wage base and Medicare at 1.45% | Local county, city or school-district income taxes that some states layer on top |
| Utah state tax from the schedule modelled in this tool | Alternative minimum tax, phaseouts and surtaxes on high incomes |
| Pre-tax 401(k) and HSA contributions that reduce taxable income | Self-employment tax, which has its own calculator on this site |
| The city or locality you select in the form | Non-wage income — capital gains, dividends and interest may be taxed on different rules |
Need the per-paycheck view instead of an annual figure? The paycheck calculator breaks the same numbers into pay periods, and the salary comparison tool shows what a move between Utah and another state does to take-home pay. If you work for yourself, start from the self-employment tax calculator.
Filing a Utah return for 2026
Individual returns are generally due April 15 following the tax year — moved to the next business day when that date falls on a weekend or holiday — and most states align their own deadline with the federal one. Where the two differ, the state deadline is the one that matters for state penalties, so confirm it with the Utah State Tax Commission. Federal filing details, including extensions and electronic filing, are on the IRS individual tax hub.
If you are self-employed or expect to owe more than the estimated-tax threshold, quarterly payments replace withholding. Our filing deadlines guide lists the federal and New York dates and the tax calendar renders them as a dated schedule. Comparing Utah with the rest of the country, or with New York, is easiest from the state pages index and the bracket guide.
